I am a Chartered Certified Accountant and a Chartered Tax Adviser, with over 20 years experience in senior finance roles and at boardroom level.
My experience spans several industry sectors, including construction, financial services, technology, manufacturing, healthcare, and services businesses, some with a purely UK focus and some with international operations.Over the course of my career, I have worked for a number of large blue chip companies. And for the past 10 years I have worked in a wide range of smaller businesses where the turnover is less than £250m, and in most cases less than £100m.
I have experience of internet based businesses, telesales companies and companies that rely on traditional direct sales forces for distribution.
I have worked for companies that do most of their business with other companies and for companies that deal directly with individual customers.
I have prepared business plans and secured seed capital for start-ups, challenged established businesses to achieve even more, worked with management teams of businesses struggling to understand whether they have a future, been instrumental in turning some of these around into the highly profitable, successful companies their founders always envisaged, and worked with administrators to put failed businesses into liquidation.
In each case, as finance director, CFO or the senior finance manager, I have been a key member of the management team and have personally contributed to growth in both revenue and profitability.
A few years ago, I bought a business by way of a management buyout, ran it for a number of years as managing director and sole shareholder, and having transformed its prospects I have first hand experience of all the highs and the lows, the stresses and the strains associated with the entire business lifecycle. I raised finance, hired and fired, secured new business contracts totalling £Ms, designed and implemented business processes and procedures, installed a new IT system and pretty much got my hands dirty doing everything that a small business owner needs to do.
When it comes to running small, entrepreneurial businesses I have, in every sense of the word read the book, seen the film and worn the T-shirt!
